Can it be? A Ray of Hope?

The biblical parallel to the story of Armageddon which the Middle East strife represents has shown little positive movement toward peace recently. If anything, the fear with which we go to sleep is that we will wake up to another war, with Iran, or between Israel and a neighbor. And that fear includes the vision of a (excuse the double entendre) mushrooming escalation that could lead to the use of nuclear weapons.

Today, Newsweek reporter Chris Dickey gives a reason to latch on to a laser-thin ray of hope that some minds actually seek peace as means to this conflict:

...[King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia] was on a roll. He used the Arab summit to relaunch a peace initiative he first proposed five years ago. It promises full peace for Israel with all Arab states if the Jewish state withdraws to its 1967 borders and an equitable solution is found for Palestinian refugees. Far from dismissing the plan, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has left the door open to further talks. "Saudi Arabia is the country that in the end will determine the ability of the Arabs to reach a compromise with Israel," he said. To Abdullah, who has seen so much, peace now looks like the best way to revive the beleaguered Arab world—and stifle Iran's ambitions.

The details of the story indicate the same old misreadings and missteps of the Bush administration in the complex world of the Saudi royal family, Palestinian inter-fighting, Jewish statehood, and Iranian ambition. Dickey understands the motivations and the history better than most people, and he gets to the meat of the issues with the players themselves. That's a lot more than can be said of the incompetent brokers-of-peace wannabes--Rice, Cheney and Bush.

The rationale of the Saudi king, and the Israeli Prime Minister, along with patience until the next US President comes to leadership, may stave off the Armageddon long enough to extinguish its real possibility.

God Doesn't Read Polls

Newsweek-March 30, 2007 - A belief in God and an identification with an organized religion are widespread throughout the country, according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll. Nine in 10 (91 percent) of American adults say they believe in God and almost as many (87 percent) say they identify with a specific religion. Christians far outnumber members of any other faith in the country, with 82 percent of the poll’s respondents identifying themselves as such. Another 5 percent say they follow a non-Christian faith, such as Judaism or Islam. Nearly half (48 percent) of the public rejects the scientific theory of evolution; one-third (34 percent) of college graduates say they accept the Biblical account of creation as fact. Seventy-three percent of Evangelical Protestants say they believe that God created humans in their present form within the last 10,000 years; 39 percent of non-Evangelical Protestants and 41 percent of Catholics agree with that view.

"...one-third (34 percent) of college graduates say they accept the Biblical account of creation as fact..." -- None that I've ever met! Half reject Darwin's theory? Didn't they ever see Inherit the Wind? Who doesn't believe Spencer Tracy?

Immediately two things come to mind:

1. The people cited in the above poll are eligible to vote.

2. God isn't concerned with who believes in his existence or not. That one-tenth who don't believe in him can sleep easier knowing this.

Dickey Interviews Saud al-Faisal

It's one thing to ask talking-head questions on the Today Show, like Matt Lauer's so-called interviews over the morning coffee with world leaders about what they wear to the big meetings. It's another thing to have an expert confront head-to-head with a real lead actor in critical events, and get the drip of an insight into the core of what's happening.

The truth behind what Saud al-Faisal told Newsweek's Christopher Dickey lies more between the lines--in the dodges and half-answers--than in what was really spoken. Dickey is the pre-eminent journalist authority on the Middle East, terrorism, and the people behind the issues rocking the world from that area. Al-Faisal is the Saudi foriegn minister, who speaks for the ruling clan of the oil-rich nation, led by King Abdullah.

When you check out Dickey's interview, remember to thing what you would have expected for an answer, and then see what the Saudi rep actually says.

For instance:

Dickey: Israelis expressed disappointment about other aspects of the Mecca agreement. There was hope, for instance, that Saudi Arabia would use its leverage to win the freedom of an Israeli soldier held in Gaza since last summer.

al-Faisal: We didn’t talk about that.

Dickey: You didn’t talk about that at all?

al-Faisal: At all. It is not our concern. It was something that the Egyptians were talking to [the Palestinians] about and we didn’t want to trip over each others’ feet talking about the same thing. That was something that was never part of the negotiations.

Oh and get over worrying about the price of oil, and gassing up your SUV in the next little while--

Dickey: It’s been said that Saudi Arabia may force oil prices down to punish Iran.

al-Faisal: They’re not going to be brought down.

Dickey: No?

al-Faisal: No. People need oil.

I, for one, am reassured. Inconsistency makes me nervous.

Hope and Inspiration -- John & Elizabeth

Normally I'd like to post a nice detailed discussion of the candidates, their issues, and back grounds, and look at that history against the latest breaking news. But the simple fact is that Elizabeth Edwards has cancer, and her husband, John, wanted to explain in the most clear terms what this means to his campaign for the US presidency.

There are many people I have seen throughout the years who exemplify grace under pressure--that complex element of tragic literature that we all had to study to understand Shakespeare, the Bible, and ultimately, humanity. And there are many more people I have seen in abject circumstances, or even just standing in a long line at the market, who haven't got a clue of what any of this means.

I was depressed, and simultaneously uplifted, by the message from the Edwards couple today. The message is simple--life deals out good stuff and not good stuff. We're all mortal, so the meat of the matter is how we deal with the good and the not so good. The Edwards' have had their share--cancer, a son's death--and yet they come to us all in coherence and, for want a better word, class--and tell us they are hopeful, positive, and not going to stop what they're doing to go off in a corner and feel bad about themselves.

Yes John Edwards is a multimillionaire. Yes the Edwards' have the means to get the best health care possible. So what? When you're dead, as Kurt Vonnegut once wrote in essence of our mortality, you're dead. And ironically, Edwards is on the crusade to seriously work on reforming the stagnant health-care system of this great country of ours.

The point is this: I heard an articulate man, who has the competency to be President of the United States, explain a situation to his potential constituents. And I remembered the speech from the nitwit who has that job, from a couple of nights ago. And I was again embarrassed for humanity, and for myself, and for Americans, because somehow, despite the genius monument of our great Constitution, we have allowed the likes of George W Bush and Cheney and the whole bunch to take charge, when there are people available like John and Elizabeth Edwards, and more, who so obviously would serve us better.

CIA? I Thought it was Mafia!

JFK assassination conspiracy theories aside, it was fun to read about the latest E. Howard Hunt speculation in today's Los Angeles Times. Aside from a couple of talking heads on a recent History Channel documentary debunking the conspiracy theories, who doesn't believe someone besides Oswald, or instead of him, fired the fatal shots into Kennedy?

Now just WHO shot those shots, that's another question. I have been led to believe over the past 35 years, since I got started with an interest into the event, that there was a hazy cross-over between the CIA and the mob, specifically Sam Giancanna's group, who were getting revenge for several issues. The CIA was pissed because Kennedy let Hunt's team hang out with no promised air-cover at the failed attempt to invade Castro's Cuba at the Bay of Pigs. And the Mafia, who came through for Papa Joe and engineered the ballots in favor of Kennedy over Nixon in Chicago in order to get the coveted Illinois electoral votes--they didn't like the young Attorney General, Bobby Kennedy, putting them on the hot seat in a ploy to clean up organized crime.

So they arranged, hand-in-hand, to murder the upstart who wouldn't follow orders, President Kennedy. That's what I thought. I don't care about the details, it is sufficient to me that so much documentary material is still being kept from public scrutiny that there must be something to hide, which after 44 years must have little to do with national security, and more to do with certain knowledgeable survivors.

Granted, that Johnson might have been a ringleader is a notion difficult to grasp, despite his dislike of Kennedy, how do you really keep that kind of involvement secret? According to the Hunt children who are trying to peddle his memoirs, that's exactly what was up back in November, 1963.

"The story, which he planned to detail in a memoir and could be worth big money — was that rogue CIA agents plotted to kill President Kennedy in 1963, and that they approached Hunt to join the plot but he declined."

The story goes on to quote one of Hunt's sons:

"He told me in no uncertain terms about a plot originating in Miami, to take place in Miami," said St. John. He said his father identified key players and speculated that then-Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was responsible for moving the venue to Dallas, where the Texan could control the security scene."

Some people think Nixon knew about the plot too, but kinda sorta turned away without interfering. Conspiracy buffs always point out that Nixon was in Dallas on November 23, 1963. No matter what stance one takes regarding the Kennedy conspiracy theories, some of the late-breaking stories are fascinating in themselves, and this one about Hunt is no different. I mean, he really was a spy--wouldn't it be interesting to know what he knew?

Foreign Correspondent 21st Century

In this day and age of high-tech communication, of satellite phones, and instant feeds from the center of a war zone, the exploits of a foreign correspondent are a far cry from the days of Randolph Scott and Hitchcock's film of the same name.

Picture my good friend, Christopher Dickey, running through the forests of Nicaragua some twenty years ago, chased until the point of almost being killed in the cross fire between the forces of less-than-evil, and not-so-good, in order to get the story, write the book, and better inform us who think it's an adventure to dig behind the shelf in the supermarket for a later-dated gallon of milk.

Dickey, Newsweek's point man in Europe for Middle-East terrorism, French presidential politics, high-fallutin' eco-theory mongering at Davos, and possibly the one journalist in the world with more info on Diana's death than anyone, having actually been present almost immediately on scene that awful night, now boldly goes where no American in Paris has gone before.

His latest foray into the midst in this week's Newsweek is perhaps his most thought-provoking and in a way dangerous, yet--here's the headline:

"It would take a private detective to find Paris bureau chief Christopher Dickey’s truly favorite bistros, and you might not like them anyway. So we’ve asked him for his second favorite Parisian restaurants (which are still pretty darned good)."

If that concept doesn't make for intense controversy (in case you or I were going to venture to a Parisian eatery and took dear Chris's word to heart and wound up (YIKES) disappointed) -- then check out Dickey, who I consider
as the premier authority on international politics in Europe and the Middle East, as well as an intrepid representative of 4th estate America on the spot! --

Immigrants Help Us, Minutemen Steal From Each Other

Here are two fascinating stories from today's Los Angeles Times that demonstrate what I've been writing about for over a year: immigrants, documented or not, help US citizens in both pay and lifestyle, and the anti-immigration crypto-fascist Minuteman organization is rampant with corruption as well as white-supremacists.

Read for your self how immigrants boost pay rates and have lower incarceration percentages than natural citizens--statistics based on US census data, not surveys. Then check out how Gilchrist got kicked out of the Minuteman organization he founded because he used donated funds for himself.

Gilchrist, 58, of Aliso Viejo, said the three board members who voted this month to remove him amid financial mismanagement allegations held only honorary positions and wielded no voting power. Documents show that in 2005 Gilchrist set up the Minuteman Project as a Delaware corporation with only one voting board member, himself.Gilchrist said he had done nothing wrong and could fully account for the organization's money. His spokesman, Tim Buehler, said Tuesday that Gilchrist opponents "are just in this for a power grab."The board members who took the vote say Gilchrist invited them on the board as voting members and that they needed to cut the connection to their co-founder because, among their other allegations, more than $400,000 of the organization's money was unaccounted for.

New Rule on Tipping--Toilet Paper'll do

Is it possible? Is it really conceivable--that in these United States, these days, a big pharmaceutical company could give a campaign donation to a candidate and in return, get preferential treatment toward its product? Oh, I forgot to mention the real reason for being incredulous that this could happen--the campaign donations from Merck to the Texas Governor's coffers and some other legislators were only $5,000 each! While Merck stands to reap billions of dollars in revenue for the Gardasil vaccine program--injecting pre-pubescent girls with an alleged cervical-cancer deterrent toxin--this huge drug monolith in effect bribes the Texan "public servants" with pocket change, and THEY GO FOR IT!

"AUSTIN, Texas Feb 21, 2007 (AP)— Gov. Rick Perry's chief of staff met with key aides about a new vaccine to prevent cervical cancer on the same day its manufacturer donated money to his campaign, documents obtained by The Associated Press show...

...A calendar for chief of staff Deirdre Delisi obtained under Texas' open records laws shows she met with the governor's budget director and three members of his office for an "HPV Vaccine for Children Briefing" on Oct. 16. That same day, Merck & Co.'s political action committee donated $5,000 to Perry and a total of $5,000 to eight state lawmakers."

I am gratified to see that my scorn and disgust for big pharma and politicians isn't misplaced. I just didn't know they were that CHEAP!

--NOW for an unsettling and not-so-rewarding topic: Last Thursday's TODAY SHOW on NBC featured a discussion about the controversy over giving the new Gardisil vaccine to young girls. Barbara Loe Fisher, our friend and congressional watchdog for the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC.org) was interviewed about this subject, along with the resident propagandist for the medical establishment. Barbara was constantly interrupted by this defensive frightened bully, and even Meredith Viera tried to calm the physician down in order to let Barbara have her say.

Here is one letter to NBC about this segment, which fully explains and states very well the problems with the presentation:

"With regards to your interview on the cervical cancer vaccine, you should know that Dr. Nancy Snyderman was rude, arrogant, domineering and ignorant!! She unfortunatley represents the typical elitist mentality that so many blind " gotta be right" doctors have. As an intelligent, informed viewer---I'm sick of having her and other so called experts rule the roost. The truth of the matter is that Barbara Loe Fisher is the President and Founder of a NON-PROFIT organization---an organization that collects only the truths, the testimonies, and the outcomes of this INSANE DICTATORIAL LEGISLATIVE STRONGHOLD COERCIVE & PROFITABLE MIND-SLAUGHTERING ABUSE called vaccination.

Get with the program and open your eyes. Stop spinning the staus quo. Autism, learning disabilites, death, diabetes and PROFITS are skyrocketing because of vaccines. Billions for Gardasil Vaccine

"The New Jersey-based drug company could generate billions in sales if Gardasil — at $360 for the three-shot regimen — were made mandatory across the country. Most insurance companies now cover the vaccine, which has been shown to have no serious side effects."

So says the latest news about Merck, the no-remorse no-nonsense big pharma steam roller drug company whose bottom line is the answer--not your health.

Do you want to know how much Merck is willing to spend to make this vaccine government-mandated, to line the Merck purses regardless of the untold havoc this drug may wreak on the blood and immune systems of young girls entering puberty? Too bad--you don't get that answer!

"Merck spokeswoman Janet Skidmore would not say how much the company is spending on lobbyists or how much it has donated to Women in Government. Crosby also declined to specify how much the drug company gave."

In case you think vaccines are safe, guess again--they are a big money fund for the pharmaceutical giants who have the clout to pay off our conressional reps and the FDA in order to get these toxic monsters to market.

Vaccines aren't a Miracle

"Vaccines are a miracle," said Bill Gates last week as announcements were made in Davos, Switzerland of the increased funding for new inoculations to save the world. according to the lead headline story in today's Los Angeles Times, we're going to be inundated in miracles soon:

"The current immunization boom could rival or even surpass the Golden Age of vaccine development between the late 1940s and early 1960s, experts say, when scientists such as Jonas Salk discovered inoculations for polio, flu, mumps and measles. But relatively few vaccines were found in the decades that followed, partly due to lack of profitability for drug companies and reduced vaccine research funding."

It's always amusing to read of some reporter's editorial yarn that somehow vaccines haven't been profitable for some time. This would contradict a now famous cover story in the 1996 Money Magazine issue titled, simply, "The Lethal Dangers of the Billion-Dollar Vaccine Business," which has been noted in this blog.

Also suspicious is the L. A. Times article's claim that things are looking up so much in the vaccine business, that Pfizer wants back in after shuttering its plants in the 1970's. "Drug giant Pfizer Inc., which shuttered its human vaccine unit in 1976, reopened it in the fall by acquiring a small British vaccine company. Even with planned layoffs announced last week, Pfizer says it intends to increase funding in its vaccine business." No doubt the loss of precious patent protection on some multi-billion dollar pills including the me-too biggest-selling anti-cholesterol statin, Lipitor, would put chills on the neck hairs of any $100-million CEO about to risk loss of one or more yachts.

In fact, as Eisenhower once said about the prospects for the nation, for vaccine manufacturers "Things are more like they are now than they ever were before."

All of this discussion about money--after all the conglomeration of honchos in Davos is about the world economy, not health--leaves out the controversy, growing day by day, over the safety of injecting known toxins into peoples' blood streams in an effort to boost the immune system and stave off all sorts of human illnesses, from the awful polio to the innocuous German Measles, assuming you're not pregnant of course.

The disastrous effects of vaccines on the children receiving them is apparent in the statistics, regardless of whether the establishment, i.e. the pharmaceutical conglomerate and big government, want to admit or accept this obvious connection.

The publishing this week of the The Vaccine Risks Report Ebook may be an omen of sorts in confluence with the headlines and Gates and Davos of increased interest by big pharma to plow into new vaccine research. It would really be great if these shots worked like we're brainwashed to think that they do. But the geometric increase in childhood autoimmune diseases--asthma, dyslexia, autism, type II diabetes--which corresponds to the increase in vaccine dosages mandated by the US government, proves that the so-called risk-reward factor is all sorrow, and misery, and loss, when your child is no longer happy and reacting with you normally. I know Gates means well, but he should stick to his expertise, software computer codes, and get off the vaccination bandwagon.

Former President Ford is dead. How do I know? Just turn on a TV at any time today and there’s some portion of his funeral droning on and on. I realize the death of a US President is a rare and major event to which society should give some homage, based on the gravity of the office. And I understand how eulogies can overlook a lot of the bad and magnify the good in a person’s life.

Marc Antony said, "The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones." Not so with the former pres--based on what I have heard and read since Ford's death—this funeral thing has been dragging on for days now—Ford was a saint beyond recall and was as close to a perfect human being as any one could be without actually being Jesus Christ. Even Alec Baldwin said on the Huffington Post about Ford’s most controversial big act: “And when he pardoned Nixon, well....what did you expect him to do?”

One of the comments to that remark took the words right out of my mouth:

Ford was an American in the worst possible way. By pardoning Nixon, Ford as a lawyer circumvented our legal system and prevented justice from being served. When our politicians saw that the rule of law did not apply to them, their lawlessness was the result at the detriment to our republic. Ford's pardon led to the boldness of Iran-Contra which was not prosecuted and the current Bush administration lies and preemptive-Iraq-war going unchecked and unbalanced.

I met Congressman Ford in his office in the capitol in 1970. It was only 7 years since the assassination of JFK, and even closer to the publishing of the Warren Commission report that Ford was a part of. I asked the congressman how he felt about those volumes of white-wash (I didn’t refer to it as white wash, but he knew what I was driving at) lining his book shelves that basically said fughettabout the hundreds of witnesses and evidence to the contrary, Oswald acted alone. His politician’s politician answer was, of course what it always was, that he was very proud of the work of the Warren Commission and stood by its conclusion 100%.

How many of the old guard was protected by that cover-up, which still pales in the blinding light of Nixon’s pardon, which, like the hurried dispatch of Saddam Hussein, buries a lot of incriminating details before they ever see the light of day? Looks like the present group in charge hasn’t lost sight of the lessons taught by the so-called “accidental president,” Ford. Oh, that’s right—he hired Cheney and Rumsfeld for high level positions near the president in the first place.

I could go on, but unlike Ford’s TV funeral goings on, I’m done.
